We had the opportunity to sit down with Russ and hear more about his journey, experiences, and insights:

Professional Background

After gaining qualifications in engineering and business development, Russell joined the company in November 2000. From the beginning, he had his career goals set on the path of sales generation and key account management. After a year of being with us, it was hard to settle, and he says he thought about moving on to a different path many times. But luckily, the company began to win more Oil & Gas contractual work, and Russ took a shine to this. Naturally, he slipped into the role of account coordinator for the sector, managing order processes, inventory, and commercial deals for frame agreements.

Taking him around the world, the role allowed him to see places and meet faces he never would have otherwise. He visited Stavanger in Norway for over 10 years at ConocoPhillips and Aberdeen every 6 weeks to meet with technical authorities for some of the world’s biggest oil platforms. It was an amazing period for both him and the Power Utilities Group, and he is rightfully proud to be part of one of the most successful periods in the company’s history.

Role & Expertise

The most difficult challenge Russell has faced in his role would have to be dealing with foreign accounts. The constant requirement for certification, seemingly endless questioning, and legal red tape can often wear on a person’s patience and prove to be difficult to work around when dealing with a plethora of other responsibilities. However, no feat has proven too difficult for Russell. By developing expertise, understanding certification processes and legal requirements, proactive communication, and skilful delegation, the division now handles foreign accounts with ease.

Over the past 10 years, filtration has become more of a consumable rather than a technical product. Russ tells us how this means it can be difficult to fend off competition, as it opens doors for all manner of suppliers, some of whom may work on lower margins. Building strong customer relationships, widening our range of products, and emphasising value over price and the technical expertise we offer has been critical to Russ when overcoming this challenge.
